Nils Hansøn Meng
Landowner and trader in Fredrikstad, Norway. He was one of the citizen who founded the city Fredrikshald (Halden), and appointed as "magistratspresident" there (superior mayor). He married Johanne (Winther?) and got from her much estate, among them the farm Dyne in Hogdals parish in Baahus "Len", where they first lived. Abt. 1640 they moved to Halden, and nearby he owned several farms, among them Eskeviken. He was in local administration already in 1630, later he became a "Herredsskriver" in “Norder Viken” (north Bohus), and then bailiff there too and in Idde and Marker "Len", and also customs officer in Svinesund and on the Swedish border. He was an important man for the king during the war 1644-45. In Halden he was a successful businessman and administated 2 timber mills for Bjelke. When Fredrikshald in 1665 got privileges as a city Gyldenløwe appointed him to Fredrikhald's first mayor, confirmed by the king, who gave him the title President, and also appointed him to be a member of "Admiralitetsrådet" (council of Admirality). Nils Hansøn Meng was "Lagmann" and "Amtmand" in Smålenene. All together he was the owner of 72 farms, 7 in Båhuslen.
Meng in Halden might be related to Mencke i Oldenburg and nearby regions. Social class and employment fit well, and Oldenburg was connected to Danmark.
I got 90 photo copies about Mencke from ”Das Staatsarchiv in Oldenburg”. In my database you can read more about the descendants of the brothers Berend Mencke (born abt. 1539), Hans Mencke (born abt. 1540) og Helmrich (Heinrich?) Mencke (born before 1550).
Variations of the last name: Mench(-e, -en), Mench(-e, -en), Menk(-e, -en), Meng(-e, -en, -in) and in latin writing (at universities) Mengius, Menckenii osv.
In Flensburg there lived a family mostly called Meincke. Some of them moved to Copenhagen and Trondheim.
Johan Meincke visited Norway several times and died 1657 in Flensburg.

Married 2. Des. 1689 Eva Margrethe Jessen
Otto von Mencken, "Etatsråd, envoyé" in Wolfenbüttel, "amtmand" in Steinburg Amt (Holsten).
Steinburg near Itzehoe north of Hamburg. Wolfenbüttel north of Itzehoe.
(There also is a place south of Hamburg called Wolfenbüttel.)
The student friends Otto Mencke (1644 - 1707) and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz both became professors at the university in Leibzig. They were busy many places and wrote letters now taken good care off. One of the letters from Leibnitz:
Wolfenbüttel, 25. Februar (/. März) 1693 (225)
A Monsieur Mencke Resident du Roy de Dannemarc .......
Perhaps this letter was to Otto von Mencken who died 1703, and not to the professor Otto Mencken?
